Education should be culture and context specific’

At IIM-Ranchi we have made Indian culture, inner development, Indian ethos and social project compulsory for students to broaden their perspective. We also offer courses on business analytics, social entrepreneurship and neuro-management to prepare them for the kind of future that is unfolding,

” Mr. Xavier said. Pointing out to a study by ASSOCHAM on management education scenario in India, he said 180 B-schools had shut down in 2012 and another 160 schools were expected to close down this year. Only 10 per cent of graduates from Indian B-schools, excluding those from the top 20 schools, got a job right after their course, compared with 54 per cent in 2008. “MBAs think too much of themselves.

If you talk jargons without in-depth understanding of the concepts, you will drown in the corporate ocean. Those who learn the subjects well, but not life skills, will also not succeed. Those who succeed in life are those who have skills, values and the right attitude,” he said. Earlier, management graduates were sent to industry to professionalise management, but now there was a need to sanitise the organisations, because it looked as if businesses could not be run without paying bribes.

It was essential to stay away from unhealthy business practices. Degrees and pedigrees did not matter in life. It was important to add value to oneself and the organisation.
